Alex Nwokolo (born 1963) was one of the front liners of the Nigeria art scene; he grew up in Lagos before completing a Higher National Diploma at the Auchi Polytechnic in 1991, followed by a Masters of Fine Arts (MFA) at the University of Benin in 2000. He has received numerous awards and prizes such as the American Ambassadors Prize in 1991 and the Guinness Certificate of Merit in 2004.
Nwokolo is a celebrated painter, known for his figures, portraits, natural landscapes and rooftop cityscapes as well as mixed media work. He identifies primarily as a mixed media artist. This identity makes sense given the range of techniques and genres that he has worked in, producing both realistic portraits in oil paint on canvas and totally abstract wall installations in metal.
