Carey Godwin was born and raised in Nigeria until the onset of the Civil War after which she continued her education in Britain. She has made frequent trips home to Lagos over the years, and has travelled across Nigeria and Africa, including exploring the Sahara Desert on a road trip from Lagos to Bern, Switzerland. Carey studied and worked as a commercial designer for 28 years, running a successful business in London before retiring to the Welsh Borders.
In recent years her interest in colour and textures grew from experimenting with printing with texture to weaving, spinning and dyeing with different materials. Carey is currently exploring weaving with color using fused glass. Through Carey’s work in mixed media she has been able to share and teach these old crafts to a group of women in Wales who continue the process of experimentation, pushing the boundaries, and ‘breaking rules’. Carey’s use of colour and imagery in fabric, glass and printmaking is inspired from her travels around the world.
